04BUILTENVIRONMENTA combination of New Mexico’smanufacturing potential and the federalInflation Reduction Act will soon beutilized by multi-million-dollar company,Maxeon Solar Technologies. In a press release Thursday, Maxeonannounced a billion-dollar investment toconstruct New Mexico’s first largephotovoltaic cell and panelmanufacturing plant on a 160-acre site inAlbuquerque’s Mesa Del Sol community.The Singapore-based company’s loanapplication for the Department ofEnergy’s Title 17 Clean Energy FinancingProgram is still being processed.Maxeon announced the project alongsidecity and state officials as ‘solar reshoring’ at a press event Friday. Several commercial solar contractorsincluding NM Solar Group, ExperiencedSolar, Affordable Solar and PositiveEnergy Solar were contacted forcomment on the renewables supply chainby The Built Environment. None hadfulfilled the request for comment by thetime of publication. A separate release from the New MexicoGovernor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s officestates that construction is expected tobegin in 2024 and that the plant willemploy up to 1,800 people. 05BUILTENVIRONMENT"This  private  investment  shows  how  ourstate  programs,  paired  with  PresidentBiden's  Inflation  Reduction  Act,  havecharted  a  path  for  New  Mexico  as  aleader  in  growing  the  clean  energyeconomy and creating a strong workforcefor the future," said Governor Grisham.Associated  General  Contractor  ofAmerica’s  construction  impact  modelcalculates  that  such  a  constructionproject  would  support  1,197  full-timeand  part-time  jobs  per  year  over  thecourse of 10 years.A  projected  gross  of  $1.7  billion  of  in-state  business  spending  over  10  yearscan also be estimated using AGC’s impactmodel,  adjusted  for  inflation  on  amanufacturing  project  whoseconstruction spans two years.In February, Forbes compiled a list of thebest  states  for  solar  in  various  metricsand  reported  that  California’s  solar  jobmarket tops the list at 75,712 solar jobs.New Mexico ranked #14 with 2,013 solarjobs.Maxeon  also  announced  Thursday,  itsfinancial  results  for  this  year’s  secondquarter  with  the  company’s  CEO  BillMulligan stating that their earnings wereweakened  by  higher  interest  rates  andpolicy disruption in California.“We  expect  these  challenging  marketconditions to persist at least through Q3,particularly  in  residential,  and  we  haveincreased  our  sales  focus  on  thecommercial and industrial (C&I) segmentas a result,” said Mulligan.According to Yahoo Finance, the compan--y's top two shareholders are WellingtonManagement  Group, LLP  and BlackrockInc.  Both  shareholders  make  publicstatements  via  their  website  regardingenvironmental, social and governance orESG  goals  that  factor  into  theirinvestment strategies.Maxeon’s former CEO Jeff Waters wrotea  commitment  letter  in  December  of2020  to  the  United  Nations  GlobalCompact asserting Maxeon’s support andeffort  to  implement  strategies  to  fulfillthe  UN’s  Sustainable  DevelopmentGoals.  Commitments  would  involvepublishing  progress  reports  on  meetingESG  goals  and  initiatives  on  an  annualbasis.An  88-page  sustainability  report,published  by  Maxeon,  covers  thecompany’s  ESG  accomplishments  andstrategies for the fiscal year of 2022. Remember to stay hydrated, wearsunscreen, wear protective clothing, and restregularly in the shade if you’re outside enjoyingnature, working in the yard, or walking the dog. Ifyou stop sweating then you’re already in dangerand if this happens you need to act fast. Get out ofthe heat, hydrate with water or a beverage thatcontains electrolytes and get rest. Seek medicalattention if your heart rate elevates or if there aresigns of passing out. Of course, if someone faintsin the heat dial 911 right away. We need to watchout for each other in this hot weather. Our Philanthropy committee did a great jobcollecting school supplies and donations forCuidando Los Niños so the children can start theyear off with new school supplies. A huge thankyou to the committee, the volunteers, and thedonors, together we were able fill a van withsupplies and collect around $1,000.00 in monetarydonations to aid in the effort. Great job all!Community involvement is one of the best parts ofbeing a part of this amazing association. Construction is set to begin next summeron a new and long-planned 62,100square foot performing arts center on themain Albuquerque campus of theUniversity of New Mexico.The project, expected to cost around $65million to complete, will replace theexisting Center for Fine Arts Building,which was built in 1963 and has in recentyears been plagued with structuralissues. Plans are advancing for the building ofwhat is expected to be a transformativemulti-purpose project some 13 miles tothe southwest of downtown Santa Fe.City officials are looking at developing aroughly 30-acre currently vacant site justto the south of South Meadows Road andNew Mexico State Road 599 and turningit into a space that would includeaffordable housing units as well as somecommercial development.What is being called El Lucero Crossingmay also include a grocery store in a partof the city lacking such facilities, as wellas an office and industrial park. Since the Inflation Reduction Act becamelaw on Aug. 16, 2022, private industriesacross the country have announced 210clean energy projects, according to a newreport released Monday by the group E2.Should all these projects come tocompletion, it would represent a total of$86.3 billion in private investments andwould create more than 74,000 jobs.
