20BUILTENVIRONMENTWICNM NEWSLETTERAUGUST 2024 >2024 DATESHello Friends,Today is National Women’s Equality Day, this daymarks the adoption of the 19th Amendment in 1920,which granted women the right to vote. Wow, 104years! We are down to a short 70 days before ournext election and voting is one of the most powerfulways, we can express our values and have a directimpact on our community and our country.Every election is a chance for us to have a say in theissues that matter most to us—whether it’seducation, healthcare, the environment, oreconomic policies. I know that we all have our ownunique perspectives and concerns, and this is ouropportunity to make our voices heard. It’s easy to feel like our individual votes might notmake a difference, but history has shown us thatevery vote counts. Elections are often decided by aremarkably small number of votes, and ourcollective participation is what drives meaningfulchange. By voting, we not only influence thedirection of our nation but also stand up for ourcommunities and the issues we care about. Iencourage you to exercise your right to vote andencourage others around you as well. On another note, I want to thank the PlanningCommittee for all their hard work this year inplanning all our events. They are doing an amazingjob! We are down to the last two events of the year:the 3rd Annual Scholarship Bowling Event onSeptember 12th and the Women in Construction NMGala on November 9th. Nearly two decades later, the word “physically” was removed from the designation inan effort to acknowledge the contributions and needs ofindividuals with a wide range of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month, and at thesame time changed the name of the education outreachcampaign to the National Disability Employment AwarenessMonth.Continues >NUMBER OF DISABLED WORKERSCONTINUES TO INCREASE, WITHPART-TIME WORK PROVINGPARTICULARLY LUCRATIVEBy Garry Boulard, Construction Reporter 10/03/2024Copyright: Canva apro

According to Labor Department figures, just over22% of people with a defined disability wereemployed nationally in 2023. That figure, said thedepartment in its report Persons with a Disability, represented the “highest recorded ratio sincecomparable data were first collected in 2008.”But while the number of people with disabilitieswho are employed has gradually increased inrecent years, the “employment population ratiowas much lower for people with a disability than forthose with no disability.”Viewed from the opposite perspective,“unemployment rates were much higher for peoplewith a disability than for those with no disabilityacross all educational attainment groups.”Improved disability employment numbers havebeen most notable in the part time category, withsuch workers seen as being nearly “twice as likely”to work part time as workers with no disabilities.Age also plays a factors in the overall picture, withgreater numbers of older people having disabilitiesthan younger people, a figure “reflecting theincreased incidence of disability with age.”Moreover, women were more likely to have adisability than men, “partly reflecting the greaterlife expectancy of women.”The Labor Report additionally points to theproduction, transportation, sales, and officeoccupations as seeing the greatest number ofdisabled workers.A significant upward trend in disability employmentwas first noticed in the early 1990s with theimplementation of the Ticket to Work initiativewhich allows former workers with disabilities topursue new jobs without fear of losing their SocialSecurity Disability Insurance and Medical benefits. That simple feature, notes the publication Forbes,“offers valuable support and work incentives thatmake attempting a return to work less daunting.”39BUILTENVIRONMENTCopyright: Canva apro

The incidence of retail crime has seen a dramatic upturn in recent years, with New York lastyear reporting a 64% increase over 2022 and Los Angeles seeing a 61% jump between 2019and 2023.According to the Council on Criminal Justice, the incidence of shoplifting saw a 24% gain inthe first six months of this year over January to June of 2023. A report from that group alsoindicated that shoplifting incidents categorized as felonies had jumped from 8% to 16% as ofearly 2023.While down in many cities in the Midwest and South, shoplifting rates were significantly uplast year in Virginia Beach, Dallas, Raleigh, Boston, and Pittsburgh. In its last Retail Security Survey, NRF member retailers said they were "highly concernedabout the heightened levels of violence and the threat of violence associated with theft andcrime," adding that a significant number of its members reported shoplifters had become"somewhat more or much more aggressive and violent than one year ago."Theft has also taken on a new profile with the appearance of what are known as "flash mobs,"or groups of half a dozen people or more who have targeted such stores as Apple, Lulelemon, and Foot Locker. Such groups, according to the publication Investor's Business Daily, may be made up of"professional thieves, gang members or the economically vulnerable" and are capable of"staging attacks across the entire supply and distribution chain, from cargo shipments toretail stores."However, the NRF has also noted that inventory losses can be caused by process controlfailures and other errors. Roughly 6% of all reported losses in 2022 were additionallycategorized as "unknown."And not all thefts, according to that 2022 NRF study, were of the kind in the popularimagination, seeing one person or several coming into a store to steal from it. In fact, thatstudy indicated that roughly 29% of all thefts were conducted by staff. It is not yet known when exactly the new NRF theft study will be released, although it isexpected sometime in the next 90 days or so.71BUILTENVIRONMENTCopyright: Canva pro

One of the reasons why people remaininterested in the Price Tower is because it is,for Wright, an odd-sized structure. Wrightusually devoted his energies to one- andtwo-story homes and office buildings. Ahigh-rise was an unusual Wright project, ashe himself admitted, when likening thetower to an "upraised hand on the prairie,"and a "tree that escaped the crowdedforest."Continues >FRANK LLOYDWRIGHTPROPERTIESREMAIN HOTTICKETS ACROSSTHE COUNTRYBy Garry Boulard, Construction Reporter 10/04/2024Copyright: Google Maps

In a speech delivered last monthbefore the Economic Club of New York,Trump remarked that “regulations cost 30%of a new home,” and said he wanted to openup large sections of land owned by thefederal government across the country tonew housing development.“These zones will be ultra-low tax and ultra-low regulations,” said Trump, adding that hisapproach would also prove to be “one of thegreat small business job creation programs.”Trump, however, has said he is notenthusiastic about a Biden Administrationinitiative to build low-income housing inhigher income neighborhoods, calling it a“sinister plan to abolish the suburbs.”Continues >

The Trumpapproach, says the same group, could come with a federalbudget deficit of anywherebetween $100 billion to $350million.Noting that Trump has alsotalked of a first-timehomebuyer tax credit, theCRFB study says that a previous$8,000 first-time homebuyertax credit enacted by Trump in2009 would now be more than$10,000 to account forinflation. Comparing the overall housingapproach of both candidates,Chandan Economics, a dataprovider for the real estateindustry, asserts that “policyagreements between America’stwo major political parties arerare to see out in the open,”before observing: “Both Harrisand Trump and criticalsegments of each party’slawmakers appear to share awillingness to use tax credits tofoster housing construction.”For that reason, continues theessay, “tax credit mechanismscould end up sitting at thenexus of any potentialcongressional compromisedealing with housing policyduring either candidate’spresidential term.”Companies are ramping up office returns, and that wasone factor leading office vacancies to hit a notable pointin the third quarter.
