Nowthat the Trump campaign has apparentlyexpanded the map, such may not be the case.To win, Mr. Trump needs to convert states that JoeBiden carried in 2020 with a minimum cumulativetotal of 35 electoral votes. 38BUILTENVIRONMENTCONSTRUCTION NEWSNATIONALNew rules proposed by the Department ofHomeland Security governing howcompanies report cybersecurity issues arebeing cautiously challenged by a majorconstruction industry association. Earlier this spring Homeland Security’sCybersecurity and Infrastructure Agencyproposed guidelines specific to cyberincidents and ransom payments, including, among other things, a requirement that anycompany so victimized must report suchincidents within 72 hours.NEW PROPOSEDCYBERSECURITY RULESMAY PROVEBURDENSOME TOBUILDERS, SAYSINDUSTRY GROUPBy Garry Boulard, The Built Environment07/31/2024The proposals also called for newrecordkeeping requirements related tocybersecurity, with the proviso that anycompanies failing to comply with thoserequirements being subject to subpoenas. The rules additionally stated that federalcontractors failing to properly make suchreports could be suspended or debarred bythe government from future project work. The Associated Builders and Contractorshas since corresponded with HomelandSecurity, suggesting that the new proposedrules potentially place “excessive burdenson contractors, including many smallbusinesses.”The group has additionally remarked thatthose rules should really apply to “entitiesthat are truly engaged in criticalinfrastructure sectors,” and in so doing,“limit excessive recordkeepingrequirements and avoid unnecessarypunitive approaches to regulatory Image generated using text to image AI

-enforcement.”In releasing the proposed rules, theCybersecurity and Infrastructure Agencyemphasized the need for companies tosubmit cyber incidents and ransomwareattack reports as soon as possible, notingthat “access to these reports will allow theagency to rapidly deploy resources, analyzetrends, and share information that couldprevent or mitigate future cyber incidents.”In a recent report sent to the GovernmentAccounting Office, the agency also said itwas working on new technology solutions todeal with an onslaught of security issuesincluding an “incident reporting portal toaccept cyber incident reports, a unifiedticketing system, and other integratedtools.”The agency has noted that it expects toreceive more than 15,000 incident reportsannually from various companies. In suggesting that the agency shoulddevelop a more streamlined approach tocyber security problems, the AssociatedBuilders and Contractors has said that shortof that, the new rules have the potential of“unnecessarily burdening manyconstruction contractors that may havelimited involvement with criticalinfrastructure.” ABC has additionally wondered about theagency’s “capacity to quickly assess anddeter cyberthreats while monitoringhundreds of thousands of entities andreports.”That builders are regarding cybersecurityissues as a matter of increasing importanceis seen in the growing number ofcontractors who are now taking outcybersecurity insurance.Contractors are also, notes the publicationConstruction Dive, requiring that theirsubcontractors must take on good securitypractices. year was only 1.4%.Moreover, looked at from the perspective ofthe last two years, the 2.8% performancewas the strongest in that period of time, with the exception of the first two quartersof 2023, when those figures came in at 4.9%and 3.4% respectively. The Bureau of Economic Analysis reportnotes that the improved GDP “reflectedincreases in both services and goods.”“Within services,” continued the report, “theleading contributors were healthcare, housing and utilities, and recreationservices. Within goods, the leadingcontributors were motor vehicles and parts, recreational goods and vehicles, furnishingsand durable household equipment, andgasoline and other energy goods.”Private inventory investment for the mostpart reflected increases in “wholesale tradeand retail trade industries that were partlyoffset by a decrease in mining, utilities, andconstruction industries.”The new numbers, said the Financial Times, isa “sign of continued consumer resilience asthe Federal Reserve considers cuttinginterest rates in the coming months.”Noting that the latest figures comprise a“sharp acceleration from the first quarter”of this year, the Wall Street Journal said thereport shows a strong second quarter as“consumers increased their spending, businesses invested more in equipment andstocked inventories, and inflation cooled.”Were President Biden running for re-election, the latest BEA report might beused by him as an argument for a secondterm. Even so, he quickly issued a statementfrom the White House declaring: “We’ve created nearly 16 million jobs, wages are up,and inflation is coming down.”Although the latest BEA figures aregenerally regarded as strong, they aresubstantially below the 3.3% to 7% seen inthe last two quarters of 2021, but nicelybetter than the minus 2% recorded duringthe first quarter of 2022.40BUILTENVIRONMENTANOTHER FOURTH-GENERATION NUCLEARREACTOR BEGINSCONSTRUCTION IN THEU.S.Copyright: canva ProBy Sonal Patel, PowerMag07/30/2024Construction of Hermes, Kairos Power’s 35-MWth iterative non-power demonstrationmolten salt nuclear reactor, has officiallykicked off in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The charterschool announced its closing earlier this year, primarily due to adeclining enrollment. That enrollment saw a count of less than 190 students as of last fall, compared with around 360 students for school year 2018-2019.Bult in 1973 and substantially renovated in 1996, the two-storystructure, designated as a Class C building, sits on a nearly 2-acresite in a largely residential section of the city.Just weeks after the school announced it would close at the end ofthe spring 2024 semester, a for sale sign appeared on the lawn tothe front of the building.Perhaps in response to that sign, city officials have since sized upthe structure for its potential, with members of the Arvada CityCouncil in mid-July agreeing to purchase the building for $6.3million.While some news sources have suggested that the structure willalmost certainly be used for housing purposes, a staff documentpresented to the council said: “While a specific purpose has yet tobe defined, the property could be used for locating various non-profits in one location.”Among the uses for the building suggested in the document: anavigation center and an emergency shelter.According to a City of Arvada official announcement, the building, which was formerly a branch office for the Colorado Credit UnionSystem, could also be used to gather “various non-profits in onelocation.”CITY OF ARVADA PURCHASESMODERN BUILDING, RECENTLY HOMETO A CHARTER SCHOOL - NEW USESIN THE MAKINGBy Garry Boulard, Construction Reporter 07/26/2024Copyright: Google Maps © 2024 GoogleImage capture: December 2021

Nested in Cutter Industrial Park which hugs Interstate 25, the surrounding buildings onaverage were built in the late 1970’s, according to the listing site, LoopNet. Retrofits for cannabis cultivation have been the norm in New Mexico, according to SawmillCannabis Company’s Director of Operations, Austin Overpeck. “It’s mostly all retrofitting,” said Overpeck, in a 2023 interview with The Built Environment. Enchanted Botanicals, now neighboring Winsupply and a Positive Energy Solar deliveryfacility, currently runs two retail locations in the city of Albuquerque. As cannabis moves in and community sports leagues move out, three other cannabis retaillocations, within a mile radius of the renovation sight, were approved by the City ofAlbuquerque since June of 2023.Futsal, an indoor version of soccer with a faster speed of play, and basketball was played byyouth and adult athletes alike at this warehouse style building. The last futsal tournament announced by the Albuquerque Futsal league was dated forMarch 26, 2021.Attempts were made by The Built Environment to contact the league regarding change ofvenue but there has been no response as of digital publication. Lateral loads may be transferred tothe foundation via braced frames ormoment frames; diagonal rods, or flatdiagonal bracing (including let-in bracing forwood frame construction), among othermethods. Where wood structural panels areused for the roof, floors or walls in abuilding, lateral loads can be resisted usingthese ordinary wall elements. This type ofconstruction is adaptable to conventionalwood-frame construction used inresidences, apartment buildings and offices.Buildings can be designed to resist thehorizontal loads introduced by extremewind or earthquakes by applying diaphragmdesign principles to your walls, floors androofs.Continue reading >THE ROLE OFDIAPHRAGMS ANDSHEAR WALLS INCREATING RESILIENTSTRUCTURESBy APA - The Engineered Wood Association, Building Design + Construction 07/19/2024Copyright: Canva proNEW MEXICO & NATIONALARCHITECTS / ENGINEERS / DESIGNBUILTENVIRONMENTVinyl records, shipping containers, andhome cooked Italian food collide in a newconcept venue coming to Chattanooga,Tennessee in 2025.
